Episode Background:
The Lok Sabha on Saturday passed the Taxation and Other Laws (Relaxation and amendment of certain provisions) Bill 2020 (“Taxation Amendment Bill, 2020”), which in addition to giving effect to the relaxations contained in the March Ordinance, proposes various changes such as capping of surcharge on dividend income of FPIs and enabling the introduction of Faceless Schemes for various proceedings under the Income-tax Act, 1961. The elimination of physical interfaces to the extent technologically feasible is in tune with the Government’s endeavour to make the tax system seamless, painless, and faceless.
