Nilesh Patel : The Author, Nilesh Patel, has given valuable inputs to the Shome Committee on GAAR, and has conducted several Professional Seminars on GAAR for CFOs, Corporate Tax Managers, Chartered Accountants and Tax Practitioners. Nilesh has a rich and varied experience of more than 25 years in the area of Direct Taxes, including International Tax and Transfer Pricing. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-USA) and a Former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) Officer. After studying engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai, Nilesh entered the field of Direct Taxes, by joining the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), on passing the Civil Services Examination in 1991. In his stint at the IRS Nilesh tackled a wide variety of tax-avoidance cases. He had reached the level of Addl. Commissioner of Income Tax before leaving IRS in 2005 to pursue a professional career. He has studied International Taxation and US Taxation at the University of California, Los Angeles. Apart from the Indian IRS, Nilesh has worked in a US CPA Firm, and also in DELOITTE - India as Senior Manager (Corporate Taxation). Currently, he practices in Mumbai as an independent consultant in the areas of GAAR, International Taxation, Corporate Direct Taxes and Transfer Pricing. He represents Taxpayers before the Dispute Resolution Panel and the Tax Tribunal (ITAT). In his practice, Nilesh has handled a wide variety of complex International Tax, Transfer Pricing and Direct Tax assignments, involving cases of Public Listed Companies and MNCs. He regularly conveys his thoughts and expresses his opinions on a number of complex Direct Taxes issues by writing Articles in Professional Journals and speaking at Professional Forums. He has been a faculty at ‘The Intensive Course on Transfer Pricing’ conducted under the aegis of Western India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (WIRC – ICAI).Nilesh has authored a Comprehensive Professional Book on “Domestic Transfer Pricing” which was published in November 2014 by TAXMANN.
