While presenting the Union Budget 2022, Finance Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman thanked “all the taxpayers of our country who have contributed immensely and strengthened the hands of the government in helping their fellow citizens in this hour of need.” Borrowing from the wisdom of India’s ancient texts (i.e. a shloka from Shanti Parva Adhayaya of Mahabharata) which translates into “The king must make arrangements for Yogakshema (welfare) of the populace by way of abandoning any laxity and by governing the state in line with Dharma, along with collecting taxes which are in consonance with the Dharma”, the FM went on to propose several amendments vis-à-vis taxation front such as - introduction of new updated return, AMT rate reduction for co-operative societies, tax relief to persons with disability, parity in NPS contribution, incentives for start-ups, incentives under concessional tax regime (u/s 115BAB), scheme for taxation of virtual digital assets, tax incentives to IFSC, rationalization of surcharge & TDS provisions in certain cases, disallowance of health and education cess as business expenditure & much more.
